Reading

May 7, 2014

I am thankful for so many things as a mama, but one thing in particular really makes my heart go pitter patter. The way my kids love books. The way they stock up on books anytime we head out to the car. We might be making a simple trip to the grocery store but one thing is for sure- they will have a book open before we even back out the driveway. The longer we’ll be in the car, the greater the pile of books that make their way into the car. Seeing them push books aside to try to snap their seatbelt buckle in place makes my mama heart proud. My kids love to devour books. I count it a blessing that both of them do. Now car rides are quiet. Last year during car rides Jacob would be trying to read but natalie was singing or chattering away trying to engage him in conversation. It is such a joy that she too has such a hunger and delight in chapter books. I am so appreciative that she too is now a proficient reader capable of entering a world of words all on her own. They devour books as though they were pieces of candy.
Today as we exited the library with heaping armfuls of books, I popped the trunk of the car so we could each drop in our armload. Jacob said “oh mama mama can I please grab one of the hardy boy books and the book on tree frogs, please?” I thought to myself “the drive home is no longer than 7 or 8 minutes. Really you want two books?” But instead I acknowledged my deep gratitude for how much he loves books and said “sure”.
